President’s Message – February 2012

Uncle Donny needs YOU
During calendar year 2011, twenty new member units joined the JCC. This took place during a period when we did not have the use of our building, and we were the wandering Jews of LBI. Our JCC is a family, and as a family we must know each other. We do this by socializing, praying, and working together. My message is directed to our new members, our long time members who have not participated very much in JCC activities, and of course to those of our family who have always been there to take charge of an activity or lend a helping hand.
Working together is one of the easiest and best ways to get to know each other. Our members, new and old, come from different walks of life, have different job or career histories, have participated in different volunteer activities, and have a variety of different areas of interest, experience, and knowledge. All of these are welcome at our JCC, and your input is needed and would be greatly appreciated.
The year 2012 in our new building will be an interesting and challenging one. It will also be difficult as we learn to deal with all aspects of the new facility, and we can use the help of everyone. Here is a PARTIAL LIST of some of our upcoming committees and activities with the names and phone numbers of the person in charge. In addition to this list, I am including other areas we must address in the coming year.
Everyone can be of help somewhere. Please call the contact person or the office and let us know your skills, interest and limitations. Getting involved and being a part of something is self rewarding, can give you a sense of accomplishment, and gives you the opportunity to work with and get to know your JCC family. So check this list, and anyplace where you can be of help, please call. As you can see, we also need legal, accounting, construction, insurance, and computer program advice. You don’t have to limit yourself to only one activity. Most of our active members are involved in many of our programs.

YOM KIPPUR – 2011
The job of being President seems to always be about asking for money, or asking for volunteers. And that is so. Because to keep our congregation going in a way that we like, it takes money, and it takes volunteers. And this morning I will ask for both. The fastest growing congregations among our Christian friends seem to be Fundamentalists, and most require tithing of money, time, and talent. I am just asking you for a LITTLE of each.
On Rosh Hashona I asked for your High Holiday Appeal contributions which are more important than ever. If you haven’t mailed in your blue card and pledge or check yet, PLEASE do so. Read the rest of this entry »

ROSH HASHONA —2011
LA SHONA TOVA. You knew I would be back again this year to ask for your support and generous contributions to our annual High Holiday Appeal. I am sure this comes as no surprise. Congregations throughout the country rely on the generosity of their members and guests at this time to help balance their budget. We plan to be in our new building in early November. It is almost 3 times the size of our old one, and that means a great increase in such expenses as utilities, insurance, and maintenance. Such costs as salaries and postage continue to escalate, and we have the added expense next year of paying interest on the almost $500,000 we have had to borrow to complete and pay for the project.
Many donations that we normally receive throughout the year for the general upkeep and running of our JCC have instead been given by our members as contributions to the Building Fund. Read the rest of this entry »
President’s Message: May 2011

Did you know that The JCC of LBI has about 280 member units of which 61 (21%) are single person memberships? Of the 280 units, about 31 (11%) live on the Island full-time and 55 (20%) are year-round residents on the Mainland. I am sometimes amazed that, with only 31% of our membership being considered year-round, and many of those traveling and vacationing for several weeks or even a month or so each winter, our Congregation is as active in the winter months as it is. Letters go out, dues and donations come in and are recorded, Bulletins are issued, our web-site is updated, and through our Shabbat Reminder our members are kept informed each week. We have religious school, breakfasts, dinners, other social activities, and services. Of course we wish that we were assured of a minyan every Friday, but our thanks go to all those that plan, organize and attend all these activities.
Did you hear what a fantastic Groundbreaking ceremony we had on March 16th? Check our web-site www.jccoflbi.org to see and hear more about it. Elsewhere in this Bulletin (and on our web-site) you can read about current progress of the construction and of our Capital Campaign.
I guess a Rabbi’s job is to teach and inspire, while a President’s job is to ask for money and volunteers. To begin construction of our new facility, we had to cut costs wherever possible while keeping the general size and functionality intact. We will initially be using our old chairs instead of new pews, and our existing kitchen appliances, lecterns, tables etc. until we can afford new ones. Our parking lot will be stone instead of asphalt. Even with all these cost cuttings we still have to borrow monies to complete construction, and this requires interest payments and that it be paid back. We still have over 100 members that have not participated, and we need everyone’s help. So please contact Rose to make a new pledge or increase your present one. By the way, check our web-site to see the latest drawings and building plans. Thanks to Karen Schwing, it is amazing what all is included on our site.
A positive note on money collection is that we raised $29,432 from 106 contributors in our 2010 High Holiday Appeal. The comparable numbers for 2009 and 2008 are $29,148 from 125 persons and $26,903 from 111. While the total dollar and average amounts are up, the number of participants is down. Still not too late to contribute.
As our busy summer season begins, we are faced with many challenges. It will be difficult to maintain our activities without a home of our own. To do this, we will need YOUR HELP. Help with the planning and carrying out of our activities, and help by attending and showing your support regardless of where they are held this summer. Any hardship or inconvenience this summer will be rewarded by having a new and larger facility for future use by us and those that follow.
We also need new ideas for our normal and our Capital Campaign fundraising. Each of these can best be done by a committee of creative and innovative people. Eileen Levin has agreed to spearhead this. Please give her or me a call to let us know that you are willing to be a part of these important committees.
SHALOM
Don Pripstein
