REFLECTIONS FROM THE RABBI
The Talmud teaches that as the old year and its maledictions end, the new year and blessings begin (Megillah 31b).
Why is it that we usually feel so good about the New Year, so much so that we are excited that the calendar lists so many of them? In the fall, we celebrate the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanna. At the same time, the Hebrew School year begins and a school calendar guides the students through the year. At the end of summer, vacations come to an end and many are back at work full time. In the middle of winter we celebrate the New Year of the Trees. In Spring, we celebrate the New Year of months.
This is the way we measure time. It is also a way of renewing our hopes for the future. Even as we bid farewell to the old, we experience newness in a variety of ways. The new year means that we have passed over the difficulties of the past year. While we may not have solved them, nevertheless a new year gives us a break. The new year means that we have the potential to overcome some of the mistakes we have made in the past, even as we are still working to repair them.
Shanna Tovah to you and your family from Ali and myself and our family. May the coming year bring us the blessings of a good and blessed year.
Rabbi Jack
RABBI JACK’S ROSH HASHANA SERMONS
Erev Rosh Hashanna – September 8th: “Waiting.” Life is too short and we procrastinate. We wait too long to do what must be done.
1st Day Rosh Hashanna – September 9th: “Hoping.” Our natural instinct is to hope for a better future. Hope is God’s gift to us.
2nd Day Rosh Hashanna - September 10th: “Listening.” We listen, but do we hear?

House Tour Chairs Marcia Nelson & Rose Valentine are so excited about the success of the event last Wednesday.
75 people visited the 6 wonderful homes on the South end of the Island. Our “guests” commented on how different each of the homes were and how pleasant a morning they spent on the tour. They are looking forward to next year’s tour.

THANK YOU THANK YOU to Bonnie Farin who helped the Chairs prepare the delicious lunch of spinach and mushroom/onion quiches, watermelon/tomato salad, fruit and brownies. Everybody loved the menu. Special thanks to Vivian Fitts and Judy Abend who made a quick stop at Acme when we thought we might not have enough food and to our young servers and assistant chefs Kaila Orliandini & Lilli Specter. The girls enjoyed sitting on the stools in the kitchen and getting to know each other just as our Sisterhood sisters do.
Thanks to the support of our members and the community, the Sisterhood raised a significant amount of money towards their commitment of $40,000.00 for the new kitchen.
Each one of our bar and bat mitzvah will be choosing a mitzvah project. We hope the congregation will help them to fulfill the mitzvah of tikkun olam – repairing the world.
COURTNEY & KAYLA POWITZ
For their Mitzvah project, Courtney & Kayla are collecting new and used nylons (the nylons can have runs, but no holes) for the Matter of Trust Organization. Matter of Trust is using these nylons, along with donated hair, to help soak up the oil that spilled in the Gulf of Mexico and save the wildlife. There is a bin at the Synagogue for collecting these nylons.
SAMANTHA GOLDEN…
Samantha is really looking for your help. She is collecting art supplies such as crayons, coloring books, markers, etc. for her MITZVAH project. The recipients of these supplies will go to children struggling against a variety of diseases at the Ronald McDonald House and/or hospitals in the area. Please help Samantha reach her goal to supply these children with as many supplies as possible. This way, the kids can take their mind of their problems and just have fun! There will be 2 large pink containers located at the Jewish Community Center of Long Beach Island to put donated supplies. One will be located in the Temple and the other in the trailer. Thank you very much!

Occasionally we are asked to provide a morning or evening minyan for someone saying kaddish. Our regular worshippers respond, but everyone is not available all the time. It would be helpful and appreciated if we can call you, when necessary, to help out. Please let the office know if we can add your name(s) to our calling list. We realize that you may not be here during the week and/or tied-up at times, but please STILL SIGN UP. You will not only be a minyan-aire but also a mitzva-aire. THANKS
