This year’s Inter-faith service will be held on Friday night, May 11 starting at 7:30 PM. The theme for this year’s service is “Freedom Ain’t Free.” The guest speaker is the Reverend Diane Ruth Gilbert who serves as Pastor to The First United Methodist Church in Beach Haven Terrace and to the Kynett United Methodist Church of Beach Haven. The Reverend Gilbert assumed her duties in July 2011. She has 30 years of pastoring churches in New Jersey. She has written material for use by the Northern New Jersey Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, taught Bible and was a speaker for the United Methodist Women’s conference. She is married to Gerry Woodlief, a mother of daughter, Marcie Anne and a grandmother to four grandchildren. Once again The Island Singers, under the leadership of Polly Moore, will participate in the service. All the Houses of Worship on LBI and in the mainland are invited to join in the service. Refreshments will be served after services.

During the synagogue dedication weekend, June 22 – 24, 2012, we will have the honor of Rabbi William Gershon as the Scholar-In-Residence. Rabbi Gershon is the Spiritual Leader of Congregation Shearith Israel, Dallas, Texas. Rabbi Gershon was ordained in 1987 from The Jewish Theological Seminary and earned a Master Degree from Columbia University.
Rabbi Gershon is the past President of the Dallas Rabbinic Association and was the treasurer of the Rabbinical Assembly, the rabbinical organization of Conservative Rabbis in America and Israel.. He was elected as Vice President of The Rabbinical Assembly in May 2012. He is a member of the Chancellor’s Advisory Council and was chosen to be the Rabbinic Mentor to rabbinical students at the Jewish Theological Seminary. He is one of thirty rabbis selected as a Rabbinic Fellow of the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem. He was appointed as a member of the National AIPAC organization.
Rabbi Gershon was born in Ocean Township, New Jersey, where his family were members of Rabbi Jack’s congregation. He was Rabbi Jack’s student until he entered the Seminary.
Rabbi Gershon is married to Racquel, who is an accomplished composer and singer of Jewish and Hebrew music. She will perform during the weekend. They have three children, Benji, Eliana and Yoni.
Rabbi Gershon will give a lecture of Friday Night, a D’var Torah on Shabbat morning and lead a study group after the Mincha service on Saturday afternoon.
